Search engines aim to ease indexing process

Google, Yahoo! and Microsoft are teaming up to develop a unified way for webmasters to update their crawlers.

The three search giants will support a new version of the Sitemaps protocol, which was first released by Google in June last year.

Web startup DropSend offers itself for sale

DropSend for saleWho wants to buy a web app? Ryan Carson has sent us the inside track on DropSend, which is looking for a new home.

The DropSend app was launched about a year ago and allows users to email large files. It stores files on a local server and provides a ‘download’ link for the recipient.

DropSend was built for less than £30,000 over an eight-month period and is profitable, but Ryan is now looking to focus on newer projects.

Startup provides better search for BBC video clips

Former head of BBC News Online Bob Eggington has launched a video search engine called searchbbcvideo.com to allow users to scour the BBC archives for clips.

The company claims that the new site it does a better job of finding BBC videos than the corporation’s own online search tools.

Yahoo launches new food site

Yahoo has today launched a new US website devoted to food, in an effort to offer more unique content and boost its advertising sales.

Yahoo’s food site will feature a searchable recipe section, as well as videos and blogs from a range of celebrity chefs. It will launch in the US initially.

Google buys wiki tool developer Jotspot

Jotspot acquired by GoogleGoogle has today acquired Jotspot, a three year old California-based company which develops platforms for building wiki-based applications.

Wikis, popularised by the online encyclopedia Wikipedia, are platforms for user-generated content. Users can create, modify and even delete information, to build up pages, in a structured format.

Pluck to close its RSS reader

Pluck to close... Pluck, the two year old Texas-based social media company, has announced that it’s planning to shut off its RSS reader product line to focus into other business areas.

A notice on Pluck’s website advises that its RSS readers for Internet Explorer, FireFox and Pluck's web edition will be discontinued from January 7th, 2007. Subscribers will have two months to export their subscriptions to other readers.

October 28th was the 100th birthday of the press release.  Internet marketing executives who are interested in the future of the online press release can learn some important lessons from the early history of public relations.

Ivy Lee, who some consider to be the father of modern PR, invented the press release on October 28, 1906. One of his first clients was the Pennsylvania Railroad in the US.  Following a major accident in Atlantic City, NJ, Lee not only convinced the railroad to distribute the first press release, he also invited reporters to the scene of the accident and provided a special train to get them there.

Video-sharing website Travelistic launches for travellers

Internet startup Travelistic.com - which aims to be the YouTube for travellers - launched yesterday, headed up by one-time CEO and president of MTVi. 

Travelistic launches 'YouTube for travellers'

Travelistic combines user-generated video with professionally produced programming, some of which is exclusive. The self-funded company itself plans to move into content creation, with a travel-themed 'video podcast' in the offing.

Diversion Media built the website using Ruby on Rails, harnessing the Google Maps API in the process to make it easy for users to browse videos by location, in a visual way. Users can also search for videos by tags.

All in all it looks pretty good. We spoke to CEO Nicholas Butterworth to find out a bit more...

Apple's iPod is five years old today

It is five years to the day that Apple launched the almighty iPod. The device has undoubtedly transformed the way many of us buy and listen to music. In the last five years, 68 million iPods have been sold, and the company holds a staggering 75% share of the market.

Alongside the iPod's success, its companion service iTunes now holds 88% of the legal music download market and is now more than breaking even, according to Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer.
