Vodafone adds Google Maps to mobiles

Vodafone is to partner with Google to provide a version of Google Maps for users of its mobile phones.

Vodafone said it will, in conjunction with Google Maps, provide easy-to-use maps and local listings, as well as local search and navigation capabilities.

Yahoo! launches mobile ad platform globally

Yahoo! has extended its mobile display advertising system to 18 countries outside the US, as well as announcing a number of deals with advertisers to target mobile web users.

The company said brands including Hilton's Embassy Suites, Intel, Nissan, Pepsi and Singapore Airlines had committed to buying ads on its mobile internet service.


Truphone aims to up VoIP ante

Kent-based mobile VoIP provider Truphone hopes to make its software compatible with 25 mobile handsets this year.

James Tagg, CEO of the company which routes calls from regular mobiles over WiFi internet, told GigaOm Truphone will shortly work on Symbian S60 and UIQ (largely Nokia and Sony Ericsson) as well as Windows Mobile.


SMS use up, marketing adoption gains

Americans are finally beginning to use SMS mobile text messaging, according to new research.

The Mobile Marketing Association's (MMA) latest annual survey found the proportion of customers who engage in texting daily rose from 41% in 2005 to 44% last year; 69% use the feature generally.

It is thought the American Idol pop talent show was a major driving force behind the upward trend - 64.5m SMS votes to the programme set a new texting record in the country last year.


Virgin Media launches, response mixed

Virgin Media was today unveiled as the new name for ntl and Telewest, with the new entity aiming to shake up UK consumer telephony, entertainment and communications provision with a quad-play offering.

The cable company last year completed the £962m acquisition of Virgin Mobile, making Richard Branson a 10.7% shareholder in the firm, which celebrated today by firing a volley of press releases.


Warner calls on moblog for movie promo

British user-generated content network moblogUK will provide the backend to a promotional website for the forthcoming Warner Pictures movie, The Science of Sleep.

The Michel Gondry film will ask people to people to capture their dreams in video, audio or still image, and post them to a moblog (mobile phone photo weblog) used to support the release. DreamBlog.co.uk is linked to from the movie's official website.


Vodafone to offer MySpace on its mobiles

Vodafone has cut a deal with News Corporation's MySpace to allow users of its mobile network to access the social network via their mobiles.

The service will launch first in the UK, followed by other major European markets, believed to be France, Italy and Germany.


Mobile networks 'mull new-build search engine'

European mobile phone networks could start their own mobile search service as they consider how to increase revenue from search advertising, according to a report.

The companies will use the 3GSM World Congress, the world's largest mobile industry exhibition and conference, in Barcelona next week to consider a joint initiative aimed at replacing lost revenue from falling access costs with that from on-the-move ads.


Emap buys mobile UGC firm Yospace for £8.7m

Emap's consumer media department has acquired YoSpace, a technology firm which specialises in user-generated content.

The deal is worth £8.7m, with a further £5.7m payable based on performance targets. YoSpace's clients include O2, Vodafone, Orange and 3.


Murdoch gets his hands on Crazy Frog

News Corporation says it will have secured a controlling stake in mobile ringtone and animation provider Jamba by tomorrow.

The Rupert Murdoch empire has formed a joint venture with VeriSign, which bought Jamba for $270m in 2004.


AdMob shows billion mobile ads in a year

Mobile pay-per-click advertising intermediary AdMob has delivered 1bn ads to mobile devices in its first year, according to the company.

The firm, which numbers former ZagMe marketing director Russell Buckley as a managing director, launched in January 2006 as an equivalent of Google AdSense for mobile.


EU study predicts 400% growth in online content revenue

Revenues from online creative content across Europe will reach €8.3 billion (£5.5 billion) by 2010, according to an EU study. The spread of broadband, mobile and the adoption of digital gadgets will drive the growth.

The research, titled 'Interactive Content and Convergence: Implications for the information Society' assessed the outlook for the online content market, identifying growth areas and potential 'roadblocks' for the market.
