Publishers, group commerce and private sales: a match made in heaven?

Yesterday, Sugar Inc., an online publisher focused on women's media, purchased FreshGuide, a group buying startup similar in nature to Groupon.

According to Sugar Inc. CEO Brian Sugar, the purchase was a no-brainer for his media company: "We believe the winning business model for next generation media companies must include diverse revenue streams...we believe that FreshGuide will provide local advertisers the ability to advertise to Sugar's large audience in a high-quality and cost-effective manner."

Gilt Groupe and Groupon avoid SEO, but maybe they shouldn't

Private sales and group buying are two of the hottest trends in ecommerce today, and two of the hottest companies in these markets are Gilt Groupe and Groupon.

Vente-privee, Groupon, and the power of urgency

Chances are you've heard of Vente-privee. The French company pioneered the booming online private sales market. And you might be familiar with Groupon, a prominent player in the increasingly hot local deal-of-the-day market.

The former sells high-end luxury products. The latter offers recipients of its emails the possibility of being able to buy products and services from local businesses at hefty discounts. What's the secret to their success? You might be inclined to say "It's the deals!" While that's partially correct, the real answer is something far more primal: urgency.

GSI Commerce goes upscale with RueLaLa.com acquisition

The good life isn't so good for luxury brands these days. Thanks to the Great Recession, many consumers aren't as eager to spend big bucks on high-end fashion and accessories. Spending less is in vogue and that has been good news for companies that are ready with bargains.

And that explains why GSI Commerce, an e-commerce and multichannel solutions provider, is paying up to $350m for Retail Convergence, the company that operates private sale website RueLaLa.com and off-price e-commerce website SmartBargains.com.
