Does Google use social signals for ranking?

There’s an awful lot of conflicting opinion out there, so let’s see if we can cut through it as best as we can.

I was writing an article on the pros of using social video apps last week, and as I typed the sentence “video can help with your visibility on search engine results pages (SERPs) and the more engagement the video receives in the form of likes, comments and shares the higher up your video will appear” I realised that I didn’t know if that second part was actually true.

Phones4U went into administration recently, after losing contracts it had with network operators Vodafone and EE. 

One of the first acts of the appointed administrators was to close the website and replace it with a customer notice.

While it's understandable that no more orders could be taken, did this act devalue one of the company's most valuable assets?

TD Bank bets on Google+ as a search play

For all of the time and money companies are investing in social media, marketers continue to grapple with basic questions about ROI. Is the investment worth it? Can the potential pay-off ever be measured accurately?
