Why NASA and other brands are tapping into the gaming industry

The US video games market generated $30.4bn in 2016, making it a record year for the industry.

Interestingly, the female demographic contributed to a large proportion of this spend, with the ESA (Entertainment Software Association) recently reporting that 40% of all gamers are now women.

30 brands with excellent social media strategies

Okay, it's probably disingenuous to pretend that social media is still something nascent and unproven for brands.

Even with a tricky attribution problem to solve, most brand marketers and advertisers agree it just makes sense to target these large, active and known audiences.

Having said that, some brands 'got' social media a lot quicker than others.

10 stellar examples of NASA’s social media strategy

It’s not all just gob-smacking pictures of intergalactic phenomena and breathtaking rocket launches, you know.

Well alright, a lot of it is, but the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (apologies for the condescension pub-quiz fans) goes far beyond mere image re-appropriation from its vast archives.

How far beyond you ask? Where no one has boldly gone before? You ask again, straining to keep a straight face.

Well to that I say “your cheap and easy reference demeans us both, and you know it.”

Here are some social media goodies from NASA.

Google+ Hangouts: eight creative examples from global brands

It’s fair to say that Google+ has failed to capture the world’s imagination in the same way as Facebook and Twitter.

Many brands diligently update their pages on a daily basis yet see very few interactions in return, so maybe it’s time to try a different tack.

Hangouts is one of the few features that's unique to Google+ and offers brands an excellent way to communicate with their followers on a personal level.

This can be done simply by hosting Q&As with employees and brand ambassadors, or through more creative Hangouts such as product demos or shoppable fashion shows.

To give some inspiration for your own events I’ve rounded up eight creative examples of Google Hangouts. Read on to find out more, or for additional information on this topic read our post on how to setup a Hangout.

Q&A: NASA's Stephanie Schierholz on navigating the frontiers of social media

Government organizations aren't often known for good social media strategy, but NASA is one of the few that is often mentioned (and in attendance) at social media events. The aerospace organization doesn't have consumer facing products, but NASA has done an excellent job using social media to engage with people and teach them about America's space programs.

I caught up with Stephanie Schierholz, the organization's social media manager, to talk about NASA's digital outreach — and how NASA is encouraging more kids to dream about becoming astronauts again.
